JAMES C. MCGOVERN

Producer • Writer • Director • Editor
Founder of JCM Films

This Detroit native moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter and found himself immersed in the music scene. It was also at this time that he was introduced to filmmaking and the infinite possibilities of lyrical and visual storytelling. His first films were portraits of the musicians he met and played with and eventually became a five-part series that garnered James an Emmy nomination.

Since returning to Detroit, James has created, crafted, and shaped short-form and long-form video and television projects for the past two decades.

His most recent feature-length documentary, which he co-directed and edited, is the multi-award winning film, “Gradually, Then Suddenly” — a dramatic and emotional, character-rich exploration of the incredibly complex story surrounding the great fiscal crisis in Detroit in 2013.

Compelling marketing and commercial production projects have provided James the opportunity to work with Apple Music, American Express, Ford, Microsoft, Mercedes, Quicken Loans, and many small businesses regionally and around the country. James volunteers his time as a committee member for Kevin’s Song, a charitable organization dedicated to generating public awareness about the causes of suicide and paths to prevention.
